I am trying to create a bootable USB drive for Yosemite and the terminal is telling me /Volumes/Untitled is not a valid volume mount point. HELP!!!

I erased the USB drive and partitioned it as directed in order to create a bootable drive. When I type in the sudo command in the terminal, it is telling me that /Volumes/Untitled is not a valid volume mount point. HELP!!!

Hello mknj,

I am also attempting create a bootable usb flash drive with the yosemite installer. I have not had this error. Is it possible that the installer does not like the untitled name for the volume? after typing in my password, the computer terminal returned with:

To continue we need to erase the disk at /Volumes/Recovery.

If you wish to continue type (Y) then press return:

the name I made for the flash drive was recovery.

So far so good. I will let you know if I am successful...

FYI

my process just completed: here is what I see when it is done... (the first you saw in my earlier post. It took about 15-20 minutes.

To continue we need to erase the disk at /Volumes/Recovery.

If you wish to continue type (Y) then press return: y

Erasing Disk: 0%... 10%... 20%... 30%...100%...

Making disk bootable...

Copy complete.

Done.

I had the same problem as OP. The process that jturquette used / posted here worked for me.\

Note: I was trying to create a bootable Yosemite install drive, destination being a USB thumb, working in 10.10.5. I followed Apple support page's directions for drive formatting and 'create install media' operations. I received the same 'invalid volume mount-point' message in Terminal. This occurred multiple times and seemingly regardless of drive name or mounting. When I changed my destination volume name to "Recovery", as jturquette described, the remainder of the Apple-specified process worked.

I had the same issue. It turns out the external drive needed to be named untitled with a lower case "u" at the start even though the sudo command I cut and pasted had Untitled with a capital U.

Here is the sudo command I used:

sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ El\ Capitan.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Untitled --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ El\ Capitan.app --nointeraction

After I renamed the external drive to untitled it worked straight away.

Put the flash drive in the USB port on your Mac. Open up the Disk Utility program in the Applications folder inside the Other folder. On the left side of the Disk Utility program your flash drive will be listed. Select your flash drive then look and the bottom center of the program and it will say Mount Point: /Volumes/. The after /Volumes/ it will say the name of your flash drive. Type that into your terminal command such as

sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Sierra.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/UUI --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Sierra.app

The UUI in this command was the name of my flash drive.
